Councillor Box became Leader of the Council in August 1998 and faced the difficult task of changing the fortunes of an under achieving local authority. Since his appointment Councillor Box has succeeded in leading the transformation of Wakefield MDC into a modern, efficient and high performing authority.
Councillor Box’s political career has also seen him Chair the Council’s Employment & Economic Development Committee from 1987- 1990 during which time significant inward investment was achieved.
Peter was Chair of the Regional Assembly for Yorkshire and the Humber from 2002-until its abolition in 2009 and Chair of the English Regions Network from 2008-2009. He is a former member of the previous governments’ Northern way Steering Group and its Economic Council.
Peter became Chair of the LGA’s Economy and Transport Board in 2010 and from 2014 to 2016 chaired the LGA’s Economy, Environment, Housing and Transport Board. He is now a deputy Chair of the LGA and sits and the LGA Executive.
Peter is currently Chair of the Key Cities Group which is about providing cities with more opportunities to boost the economic prosperity of the country.
Peter Chaired the West Yorkshire Combined Authority from 2014 to 2017 and now Chairs the West Yorkshire Combined Authority Investment Committee. He is a Member of the Leeds City Regions Leader’s Board and the Leeds City Region Local Enterprise Partnership.
Peter has served as Chair and Vice Chair of Local Government Yorkshire and Humber. He was a board member of the former regional Learning and Skills Council and served on the board of the former Young Person’s Learning Agency (YPLA). Peter is presently part of a new Commission on the future of apprenticeships in the construction industry.
Peter was raised in Castleford and educated at Queen Elizabeth Grammar School in Wakefield. He has a strong and passionate connection with the Wakefield District. He is a Trustee of the Yorkshire Sculpture Park and a former Trustee of the National Coal Mining Museum for England, two of the District’s most iconic attractions. He is also Emeritus Trustee of the Hepworth Gallery. In addition Peter is also a Patron of the local charity, Spectrum People, set up to help and advise citizens of Wakefield on NHS and health related issues.
In 2009 Peter was awarded a CBE for Services to Local Government. Before retiring in 2005 Peter was a Probate and Trust Manager.
Peter lives in Castleford with his wife Judith, they have a grown up son and two grandchildren. Peter has a broad range of interests outside his political life, including travelling, gardening, and a passion for Irish music and literature. Peter is a keen rugby league fan and endeavours to watch his favourite team, the Castleford Tigers, when at all possible.
