Minutes:
Thechairinvitedmemberstodiscuss the publicationoftheBetter Devolution for the WholeUK report bytheAPPG onReform, Decentralisation andDevolution asboardmembershadattendedthe launch receptionfor thisprior to theboardmeeting.
Inthediscussionwhich followed,membersmadethefollowingpoints:
· Attempts werebeingmade topublicise the report to MPs.Although theywerein the minority, it wasfelt that someMPslacked understandingof devolution and thisneededaddressing. The LGA could proactivelyengagewith parliamentarianshere andthink abouta strategyfordoingso.
· TheLGA could alsomake the DepartmentofCommunitiesand Local Government moreawareof thereport’smessage.
· It was suggestedthat the LGA producea document refuting misleadingstatementson devolution and clarifyingitsbenefitsto the public. Confidentialityhad previously workedagainst the devolution agendainthisrespect.
Actions:
1. LGA officersto engagewith MPson thedevolution agenda.
2. LGA officersto work to inform the Department of Communitiesand Local Governmentof the report’smessage.
3. LGA officersto producea document clarifying the benefitsof devolution and refutingmisleadingstatements.
