The Chair invited Naomi Cooke, Head of Workforce, to introduce the item. 

Naomi gave an overview of the paper to members, drawing attention to public sector targets as part of the government’s efforts to deliver three million apprenticeship starts by 2020, along with the challenges that the sector has met.  Naomi concluded by giving an overview of the support programmes the LGA is providing for councils. 

The Chair invited members to comment:

-       Members highlighted how some communities and local areas are lacking suitable skills, which is soon going to be a real emergency and have an extreme detrimental effect on local economies. 

-       Cllr Phillips observed that the apprenticeship figures that are in the paper are broadly in-line with figures the Government published this morning.
